Clean Water Allows For Healthy Play in Angola

Antonio and Manuel stand by the truck they enjoy playing with.

The skeletal frame of an old Chevy truck that once made its way through the fields four decades ago is now the setting for play in a neighborhood in Kiniambi, Angola.

Antonio and Manuel (pictured in front of the truck) have grown up together. The friends, 10 years old, are among the oldest in this neighborhood of about 12 children and therefore are the ones setting the tempo and leading the way in play. They take turns at the steering wheel, while the other children act as happy passengers.

In this remote community, the children are all aware of global and local illnesses, but are unafraid.

When asked why, Antonio and Manuel replied practically in unison, “There is enough water to wash our hands as much as we want.”

“There is enough good water for everyone,” added Manuel.

Over the last four years, Episcopal Relief & Development and our partners in Angola have succeeded in constructing 126 water structures across Songo Municipality, which means available clean water for over 11,000 children, who, like Antonio and Manuel, can now protect themselves and continue to enjoy their time at play.

Moments That Matter ®, a program partnership of Episcopal Relief & Development, examines a child’s full environment including health and nutrition, and works with caregivers to implement changes so that kids can play and dream with ease.
